Georgian Vice Premier, Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze's interview with "Nikkei" newspaper

On July 12, 2017 "Nikkei" newspaper published an article and an interview with the Georgian Vice Premier, Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze.


Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Mr. Mikheil Janelidze in an interview with The Nikkei in Tokyo underlined country’s willingness to accelerate the procedures to become a member of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and European Union (EU). The Minister mentioned that the U.S. is the biggest supporter of the country and reiterated the importance of the assistance from Trump administration to maintain its national security.

The minister also emphasized that 80 to 90 percent of citizens of Georgia support the idea of becoming a member of NATO and EU. He also added that the British exit from EU has not changed the importance of the alliance. Without mentioning specific timeframe, the Mr. Janelidze said: ”We are proceeding the establishment of system that meets EU standards and cooperation in national security sphere so that we will have better outlook in a few years.”

Speaking of the relationship with the U.S., Georgian Prime Minister, Mr.Giorgi Kvirikashvili has met President Trump in May this year. The U.S. administration clarified their stance to support Georgia’s territorial integrity during the meeting. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia sees it as a clear sign of the U.S.’s involvement on this issue and expects for their future action.
