Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Mr. Mikheil Janelidze's interview with the Mainichi Newspaper

On June 1, 2017 the Mainichi Newspaper issued an article and an interview with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, H.E. Mr. Mikheil Janelidze. In the article an author, Mr. Hitoshi Omae underlined that the U.S. has continued to support Georgia since 2000s in the fields of politics, economy and national security. Georgian Prime Minister Mr.Kvirikashvili had a meeting with President Trump in the beginning of May this year and Mr. Janelidze emphasized that the strong partnership between two countries was reaffirmed during the Prime Minister’s visit. “I have no doubt on the new U.S. administration’s stance on policies concerning Georgia and the problems we have with Russia”. While the Trump administration tries to build a better relationship with Russia, as a country confronts with Russia, the minister denied the worries on this issue.

Georgia and Russia promptly broke off diplomatic relations with each other after the conflict in 2008. In 2012, Georgia started a dialogue to improve its relation with Russia and Mr.Janelidze pointed out that 1 million Russian tourists visited Georgia in 2016. The minister also said: “The dialogue have made clear results and we will continue talking in the future to maintain stability.”

On the other hand, regarding the issue on the two regions, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, that are so-called independent states with the support of Russia, Mr. Janelidze condemned and said: “Russia have strengthened its military power since the beginning of the year to take the occupied region into its territory.”

The Minister reiterated that Georgia will not resume diplomatic relations unless Russia will not withdraw the ruling to recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia as states in 2008.
