President Salome Zourabichvili met with H.E. Alexander Van der Bellen, Federal President of Austria, as part of her working visit to Tokyo.
President Zourabichvili briefed her Austrian counterpart on current events in Georgia, the Georgia-Russia relations, and the ongoing situation in Georgia’s occupied territories, specifically on “borderization”, the restriction of the freedom of movement across the occupation line, and the ban on direct flights from and to Russia. The sides also emphasized Georgia’s integration path in the European Union, visa liberalization with the EU, and the importance of circular migration.
President Zourabichvili stressed circular migration as a priority and a weapon to overcome the issue of illegal migration and support legal employment abroad. Pilot programs of circular migration have been successfully tried in Poland and other countries, including Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary and Portugal, have expressed their readiness to cooperate with Georgia in this field. As President Zourabichvili stated, Georgia has been cooperating with partner states to open up opportunities for temporary legal employment abroad. The sides also discussed the further prospects of economic ties expansion. The Austrian President invited President Salome Zourabichvili to Austria.
